 Orphan World Foundation for Children
SOME orphans find a family. Millions DON'T. Bad things happen to children left alone in the world. We are an adoptive family from the place where kids' dreams come true - Orlando, FL. We're helping homeless kids get the dream of a better life. Help us help the O.W.L.S.

Small Charities Make a Difference. 911 For Charities Helps Local Nonprofits Raise Funds to Help Needy People

On September 11, 2005, the 3rd annual Charity 4 Charities event was held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, FL. Dozens of restaurants provided delicious food. Music and auctions entertained participants. A corporate mixer, wine tasting, celebrity look alikes, auctions made the event enjoyable for everyone.

Because of the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, turnout was less than expected. Many caring people in the community were involved in relief efforts. Many donated time, energy and money. That's what makes our community so great...the caring spirit of so many who live in Orlando.

Unfortunately, the charity event didn't have as large a turnout as hoped. Fewer people were able to attend the charity event. That meant fewer people to bid and less money for charities that worked hard all summer to make the event successful.

Despite the low turnout, Orphan World ranked second in earnings with just under $3000. We were very fortunate to have Governor Jeb Bush donate a tour of the Governor's Mansion and a visit with him as our live auction item. Our other auction items were spa packages, a Golf Gift basket, and many small items.

Even though we didn't make as much as we had hoped, the fundraiser was very valuable. It helped Orphan World grow. We have more volunteers and support. We are even partnering with the Orlando MAGIC for a fundraiser, November 19th.

Funding helps any organization grow so we hope the Magic event is a tremendous success.

Since the event, we have sent Backpack Carepaks to homeless children in the Gulf Coast region AND to orphans in Romania. With more funding, we will develop the training/mentoring program.

Soon we will also be updating the website. An effective website helps us connect volunteers who want to help with programs that need help. Here are a few programs we need volunteers for:

1. Join or start a local O.W.L.S. chapter. Students, youth groups, service organizations, friends, etc. can start a chapter. They collect clean clothing and supplies for Backpack Carepaks to send to homeless street children. We locate volunteers able transport and safely deliver them. This program empowers people to help children who have absolutely nothing.

2. Help with a training/mentoring program for homeless children. They will learn a craft to earn money for food and shelter. Once the prototype is working effectively, the program will be expanded.

3. Help local teens who are transitioning out of foster care. Contact business leaders about jobs or job training. Be a mentors to help find affordable housing, resume writing, and things we take for granted - dinner with a family on holidays, a birthday card, etc.

4. Support our fundraiser. The Orlando MAGIC is PARTNERING with Orphan World, Saturday, November 19th in the game against New Orleans. Business leaders, Joe Hernandez and Anthony Suarez are generously hosting a FREE pre-game party featuring New Orleans food and music. We are very fortunate to have such wonderful sponsors who work tirelessly to help needy children.

Before the holidays begin, give Thanks by Giving help to a homeless child. We list opportunities on our website to make a difference. You can also participate in local organizations near your community. Whatever you do, DO SOMETHING.

Be a Blessing to all around you and Happy Thanksgiving.
